Protecting our mobile heritage in a net-zero future At a time when climate change and the need for clean air are of huge global concern, FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) has agreed on a powerful new strategy at its annual General Assembly, held online on 20th November from Munich, Germany. “FIVA’s new strategy shows support for the commitments arising from the Glasgow climate summit, but also aims to protect the vital cultural importance of the historic vehicle movement,” says FIVA president Tiddo Bresters. “These two aims are in no way contradictory.” FIVA fully supports [...]

FIVA launches Hall of Fame – announcing its first 14 ‘heroes of motoring history’

2022-04-29T16:22:28+02:00

In 2021, FIVA launched the Heritage Hall of Fame to honour and recognise significant contributors to the history of the automobile and the historic vehicle movement. Individuals are first nominated by FIVA clubs across the globe, from which a small number are then selected by a prestigious panel of international judges. As Tiddo Bresters, president of FIVA, explains: “Not every hero of the motoring world is a household name. Induction into the FIVA Heritage Hall of Fame is a tribute to an individual’s genuine lifetime achievements, but it’s a very personal selection. It reflects the opinions of FIVA clubs around [...]

Message from the FIVA President

2022-01-17T13:31:28+01:00

Vacation time is here, with motorways, autobahnen, autoroutes, autostrade, and autopistas once again busy at weekends. Happily, there are more travel options than in Summer 2020, and cars and motorcycles are clearly the preferred means of holiday transport because – with the virus still around – they bring the least hassle. The camper, in particular, is proving more popular than ever, offering lots of freedom to young and old. Meanwhile, club meetings and events are starting to re-emerge, with interest in historic vehicles clearly undiminished. All this gives us, the FIVA General Committee, sufficient inspiration to face the future with [...]

Global skills shortage threatens the future of historic vehicles

2022-02-09T14:35:38+01:00

Some of the most iconic vehicles in history could be lost to the future unless new blood is introduced to the restoration industry. That is the main conclusion reached at a FIVA-supported international symposium in Bucharest on 24 July 2021, titled ‘Restoration – Art or Science?’ FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) is warning that specialist training is urgently needed to avoid vital restoration skills dying out. FIVA president Tiddo Bresters describes it as an “existential challenge” for the future of classic motoring: “This is one of FIVA’s primary objectives – to foster the preservation [...]
