FIVA PRESENTS THE SUQUÉ MATEU FAMILY WITH THE HERITAGE HALL OF FAME AWARD

Damián Mateu is the first Spanish to be inducted into the FIVA Hall of Fame, which recognises his important contribution to the history of motor racing as manager of Hispano-Suiza. On 27 May, FIVA Vice-President Peter Edqvist presented the Suqué Mateu family with the Trophy which accredits their ancestor, Damián Mateu, as one of the 14 Heroes of Automotive History 2021, the first Spaniard, and so far the only one, to receive this award which signifies his inclusion in the International Vintage Car Federation's Hall of Fame. We are extremely grateful to Prof. Lorenzo Morello, Chairman of the Culture Commission of ASI, our Italian ANF, for sharing with us the precious booklet he wrote, “1886-1906 From the horseless carriage to the automobile”. The material presented here was originally the basis of a programme of lectures given at a number of Italian universities between 2015 and 2017 and covers the twenty years from 1886 to 1906 which was particularly a significant period in the emergence of the car. FIVA Preservation Award goes to 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports

Among the many awards given at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza of Villa d’Este is one that recognises the historical and cultural importance of the motor car. FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) established its Best Preserved Vehicle Awards in 2016 to reward the custodians of truly authentic and perfectly maintained historic vehicles. The idea is that awards are given to vehicles that retain such a high proportion of original components, materials and finishes that they can be seen as important cultural artefacts.
