About FIVA

FIVA – who we are

The motor vehicle has liberated the world – and we owe it to future generations to safeguard our automotive heritage.

FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) exists for just that reason. It’s a worldwide organisation dedicated to the protection, preservation and promotion of historic vehicles and related culture, as well as their safe use – and it’s proud to be a non-governmental partner of UNESCO.

FIVA was founded in 1966 by an international group of historic vehicle organisations, who felt the time had come for a worldwide body to promote and guide the interests of the historic vehicle movement throughout the world.

Our primary objective is to encourage the safe use on the roads of self-propelled, mechanical vehicles more than 30 years old, for the benefit of their owners, dedicated enthusiasts, and the general public. But there’s far more to the historic vehicle world than simply driving an old machine: ownership broadens your outlook, creates a new circle of friends, and above all brings a huge amount of fun.

By bringing together historic vehicle enthusiasts from every corner of the world, FIVA:

  • actively encourages the younger generation to enjoy all that our automotive history has to offer
  • helps to prevent national and international legislation from adversely impacting owners of historic vehicles and their right to drive on public roads
welcomes enthusiasts for all types of historic vehicles, whether cars, motorcyles or utilitarian
  • promotes historic vehicle events around the world
  • establishes standard methods and rules for dating and classifying historic vehicles – and through our FIVA ID Cards and Youngtimer Registration Documents, enables owners to document authentic vehicles
