On the 1st and 2nd of June 2019, history was made in the Vintage and Classic Motorcycling world of India.
In celebration of FIVA Motorcycle Week, FHVI hosted the FIVA International Historic Motorcycle Show, 2019 in Bangalore. For the first time, 200 of the most rare and exclusive motorcycles, scooters and mopeds from the early 1900s to the 1980s, assembled in front of the iconic UB City. For the first time, these two wheeled heroes came out from behind the shadows and took center stage. As thousands of spectators walked through the gates, their eyes glistened with excitement; they were amazed at the spectacle. Neatly arranged according to the brands were some of the most precious jewels tucked away in different parts of India. Most were from companies that no longer exist, but whose legacy after this event, will continue for generations. On entering the venue, what unfolded was a history lesson like no other. The eyes first went to a giant screen that articulated the meaning of ‘Historic Vehicles’ and the Federation’s role to Preserve, Protect and Promote them. Then clippings portraying the stories and legacies of brands like Royal Enfield, TVS Racing and Harley Davidson played. The FIVA Best Preserved Award 2019 was presented in Villa d’Este to a 1928 LANCIA LAMBDA SERIE VIII, with a V4 Engine, 2569cc, 69 hp at 3500 rom Coachwork: Four-Seater Torpedo, owned by Anthony MacLean, from Switzerland. Compared with the technical benchmarks of its era, the Lancia Lambda presented in 1922 was one of the most advanced automobiles of all times. There is simply no room to enu- merate all its innovations here. Let’s just say that the Lambda had the first unitary body ever built and defined the layout that only became established gradually as the standard three decades later. Around 11 000 units were created up to 1931 in nine model series. This car is one of six that Lancia prepared as works cars for entry in the Mille Miglia in 1928 — and probably the only one that survives to this day. Three years after the murderous competition it came into the hands of a British owner. He kept the Torpedo for more than 40 years, using it as a tourer between England and Switzerland up until 1939. The Legislation Commission (LC) met on 11 and 12 May in Romania’s capital Bucharest. The meeting was hosted by FIVA’s ANF Retromobil Club Romania (RCR). By convening in Romania the LC implemented for the first time a concept that was presented to the 2018 General Assembly in Gibraltar. That is to have LC meetings in the country which at that time has the EU Presidency. According to a rotation scheme each of the EU Member States is EU President country for a half calendar year. In that period it leads all EU Council meetings and has a more influential role on the EU agenda. It offers the country the chance to put itself in the picture and makes it the first country to approach for interest representation too. The EU arena is FIVA’s sole multinational governmental playing field. For protecting the right to make use of public roads it is therefore essential that FIVA acts directly with EU politicians and policy makers, but for achieving results good cooperation with FIVA’s ANF’s and other national members in the EU Member States is very important too. On Wednesday, May 1, an important event was held reserved for Utility Vehicles in Bratislava, organized by the Slovak ANF Federation of FIVA, in collaboration with the local Veteran Club TATRA 141, which was attended by the Director of the Utilitarian Commission Fiva Roberto Sarzani and the members of the Commission Mr. Timo Vuortio, Frantisek Cecil, Petja Grom, and of course Mikulas Ivansko, organizer of the event and also a member of the Commission. The event, titled Veteran Tatra Rely, Fiva 2019 calendar, saw the participation of many Tatra vehicles, a Slovak manufacturer, both for transport and cars; Tatra also built trams and buses, which were also present at the event. In the morning, the local authorities, together with the members of the FIVA Utilitarian Commission, started the event which, from the central Piazza dell'Opera House, led through the streets of the city to continue towards Austria; on the return, in the afternoon, in the pleasant area of the Forest Koliba, just outside Bratislava, a large audience awaited the return of the many vehicles, trucks, buses, military vehicles and much more. The FIVA World Motorcycle Rally is held each year in a different location around the world. Run under the direction of FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens), it allows 130 collectors and owners from all over the globe to spend up to four days on the most beautiful roads and fascinating places, riding their historic motorcycles. This year's rally will be particularly special, as it’s taking place across three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. From 27th June till 29th June, the participants will be riding the roads of a different country each day. This year’s organiser of the annual FIVA World Motorcycle Rally is the Croatian HROS (www.hros.hr). Technical support for the rally is provided by the Slovenian SVAMZ (www.svamz.com), Italian MotoClub Trieste (www.motoclubtrieste.com) and ASI, the Italian association for classic vehicles. Text and photos: Vicente Sevillano Guerrero A new edition of the Raid 4L Trophy was celebrated from 22nd of February to the 3rd of March, one which is considered the largest student rally in Europe. This year was the 22nd edition, and it has been held since 1997. In this event students between the age of 18 and 28 years old participate, from different corners of the Globe. And the participants drive only the legendary French classic, the Renault 4L. This iconic car was manufactured for more than 30 years, from 1961 to 1994, in different countries. This wonderful initiative of the Raid 4L Trophy was founded by Jean Jacques Rey, a legendary raid driver, who participated in the Paris-Dakar and the Rally of the Pharaohs, amongst others. Currently, Jean Jacques organizes and directs this event with the collaboration of his daughter Géraldine Rey. In this edition, 1,100 Renault 4L cars participated in its 5-door saloon and 2-door van versions, with a total of 2,200 young people from different countries such as France, England, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, travelling around 6,000 km. C’est avec le plus grand chagrin, le cœur lourd et la plus profonde tristesse que nous devons vous informer que le Vice-président de la FIVA, Howard Danino, est décédé paisiblement hier à son domicile à Gibraltar, entouré de sa famille. Howard Danino a succombé à un cancer court mais dévastateur. Howard était un pilier du Gibraltar Classic Car Club et il a laissé derrière lui l'héritage d'un mouvement de véhicules historiques florissant à Gibraltar. Non content de ses réalisations sur la scène des véhicules classiques de la région, Howard a dirigé en 2013 le mouvement visant à faire accepter la GCVA (Association des véhicules classiques de Gibraltar) comme un membre à part entière de la FIVA. Lors de l'assemblée générale de la FIVA en 2014, le GCVA a été accepté comme membre à part entière. The first of this year’s three FIVA World Rallies takes place in Austria, from 22 to 26 May 2019, and is open to any vehicle built up to 1980 with a valid FIVA ID Card – not just to members of FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles). “The Austria Classic is intended as a ‘regularity event and/or touristic discovery trip’ to enjoy not only driving your own historic vehicle, but also the architectural, geographical and cultural diversity of Austria,” explains Robert Krickl, president of OMVV (Austrian Motor-Veteran-Federation) and OMVC (Austrian Motor-Veteran-Club), the FIVA clubs organising the Austria Classic. Starting and finishing at the Radisson Blu Park Royal Palace Hotel in Vienna, the event is a 650km run round Vienna, Wachau, Burgenland and the Semmering region, with a choice of two classes to enter: one for Regularity (Classic) competitors and one for Touring (Trophy) participants. Wachau, which will be explored on the first full day of the rally, is a part of Austria renowned for its picturesque landscapes: rolling hills that stretch along the Danube river. Other reasons for its popularity with visitors include the region’s high-quality wines.
2018 was dedicated to the cultural heritage of Europe. Variuos cultural events, attracting more then 3500 visitors, were organized all over Europe bearing the title European Year of Cultural Heritage. For us, historic vehicles enthusiasts, associated in Zveza SVS, FIVA ANF in Slovenia, the big questions were: are our historic vehicles and our activities with them also part of the cultural heritage and if they are, how to organize suitable events to celebrate the cultural heritage year. Very quickly we came to the decision that everything related to our activities with historic vehicles, including the vehicles themselves, represent our technical culture and is, therefore, part of our cultural heritage. Then we decided to start the project called »Štafeta od Pirana do Goričkega – Relay event from Piran to Goričko«. It was not a relay in the true sense of the word, but it was a journey of ideas and awareness of the value of everything that is past, yet a very important and indispensable part of our present life. Details have been released on the spectacular FIVA World Rally in Andorra this summer (1-7 July 2019), open to anyone with a historic car at least 30 years old, not only to members of FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles). As FIVA President Patrick Rollet explains, “While Andorra is hosting the event, the World Rally enables participants to visit three countries – Andorra, France and Spain.” The itinerary is bursting with opportunities to enjoy new experiences in company with other historic car enthusiasts, from rafting in Sort, a small Spanish village some 70 km from Andorra to riding Andorra’s Tobotronc (at 5km, it’s the longest Alpine toboggan run in the world – but very safe!). There are museum tours, shopping expeditions and a concours in a pedestrian-only avenue in the centre of the nation’s capital city, Andorra la Vella plus, for those who prefer more sedentary pursuits, there’s a concert at the Ordino Auditorium and spectating at the Cirque du Soleil. Earlier this year, the FIVA Culture Commission (CC) invited classic vehicle enthusiasts to nominate entrants for a new series of awards to celebrate our cultural and technical mobile heritage. FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) announced that the Culture Awards would comprise the following three categories: RESEARCH
DEDICATED SERVICE by INDIVIDUALS or ORGANISATIONS (CLUBS, FEDERATIONS, MUSEUMS), ETC.
EDUCATION, TRAINING and the raising of AWARENESS At the annual FIVA General Assembly in Gibraltar, the CC had the honour of revealing the winners of the three categories. The selection proved to be difficult due to the quality of the submissions, and the CC needed to study all the applications in great detail, with consideration given to a range of factors that included media coverage, involvement of the general public and the participation of younger enthusiasts. It is in Istria that the world-renowned truffle can be found, where charming hilltop villages welcome visitors – and it’s easy to enjoy gourmet meals and fine Istrian wines while discovering local secrets, history and spectacular sites. Of particular interest to many will be the third day of the tour, dedicated to Trieste in Italy, where participants can preview the exhibition on Camillo Castiglioni (a huge influence on early BMW) at Palazzo Gopcevich, and ride the legendary climb of the ‘Trieste-Opicina’ race. This years' edition has been a huge success, even more than usual, with 16 countries involved: ANDORRA, COLOMBIA, CYPRUS, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, FINLAND, GERMANY, GREECE, HUNGARY, ITALY, NORWAY, SLOVENIA, SPAIN, ROMANIA, UNITED KINGDOM, and the USA.
