Vernasca Silver Flag 2022: a historic hillclimb dream in the heart of Italy

A special fascination cloaks racing cars: it stems from the passion of those who built or drove them, of those who research them, restore them and look after them, of those who, today as in the past, admire them by the side of the road and perhaps, at home, dream of them. The Vernasca Silver Flag—from 10 to 12 June, thanks to the organisational commitment of the CPAE Club Piacentino Automotoveicoli d'Epoca—brings all these dispositions of the soul to synthesis. Lola T 142 The 'pretext' is to recall the Castell'Arquato-Vernasca hill-climb race, held in 17 editions from 1953 [...]

MAUTO and restoration

From the very start, automobiles have attracted great interest among human beings, given their hunger to create, improve, be independent, and move around swiftly. The early 20th century marked the appearance of cars on our streets: the same vehicles that, over the years, would acquire a great cultural level and are stored at museums and collected by enthusiasts. It is thanks to their great historical value, as well as their quality and rarity, that they are compared to true works of art. This was the philosophy behind the birth of the MAUTO – the national automobile museum of Turin – [...]

FAKE: a “different” exhibition at MAUTO, the automobile museum in Turin

In the worldwide community historic vehicle enthusiasts, “forgery” is kind of a taboo word: everybody knows it exists, but nobody wants to talk about it. With its last exhibition, inaugurated on 28th June 2022, MAUTO, the Italian Automobile Museum in Torino, literally took the bull by the horns and addressed this difficult, yet fascinating topic. “FAKE: the automobile between originality and forgery” was organised by MAUTO in cooperation with ADM, the Italian Customs and Monopoly Agency, to set a spotlight on this “dark side” of the passion for historic vehicles. And it is not a minor issue: just to give [...]

We are extremely grateful to Prof. Lorenzo Morello, Chairman of the Culture Commission of ASI, our Italian ANF, for sharing with us the precious booklet he wrote, “1886-1906 From the horseless carriage to the automobile”. The material presented here was originally the basis of a programme of lectures given at a number of Italian universities between 2015 and 2017 and covers the twenty years from 1886 to 1906 which was particularly a significant period in the emergence of the car. It was during those years that the horse-drawn carriage was transformed, through the replacement of the horse by a crudely-built [...]

FIVA Preservation Award goes to 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports

Among the many awards given at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza of Villa d’Este is one that recognises the historical and cultural importance of the motor car. FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) established its Best Preserved Vehicle Awards in 2016 to reward the custodians of truly authentic and perfectly maintained historic vehicles. The idea is that awards are given to vehicles that retain such a high proportion of original components, materials and finishes that they can be seen as important cultural artefacts. It's no small achievement, therefore, for Swiss collector Fritz Burkard to [...]

Passing on the passion: young people embrace classic vehicles in their own way

The first global symposium on the challenge of attracting young people to the historic vehicle community was held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 14  May 2022. Supported by FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles), the event identified key steps to safeguard our automotive heritage for future generations.According to FIVA, as historic vehicles have grown older, so too has the average age of the people who care for them. Yet ‘passing on the passion’ to the next generation is a vital step if classic cars, motorcycles and utilitarian vehicles aren’t to disappear from our roads forever. [...]
